The first image that comes to your mind when you think of diamonds is of clear crystal like diamonds that you so often see on display in jewelry stores. But, unlike the common presumption diamonds come in a wide range of colors including pink, yellow, orange, blue, black and green. Brown diamonds are more popularly known as chocolate diamonds for their similarity of color and also a marketing stunt.
These beautiful colors are result of some trace elements that become a part of the atomic structure of diamond during its formation process. In this particular case of brown diamonds irradiation materials are responsible for the bestowing the color upon diamonds.
Even the largest diamond in world’s history, ‘The Golden Jubilee’, a 545 carat diamond is
a brown diamond. The diamond was gifted to the King of Thailand to celebrate his 50 years as a king.
Brown diamonds may not be as rare as green or red diamonds, but they are rarer than the white diamonds and are slowly coming into the limelight. With their subtle golden tones, chocolate diamonds have become a new age classic.
Brown diamonds range in color from Champagne to Cognac and are found in the mines of Australia, Africa and Siberia. The Argyle diamond in Australia that is more famous for producing pink diamonds is also the largest producer of brown diamonds in the world.
