Everyone these days keep talking about birthstones, birthstone jewelry. July is the month of rubies, April for diamonds, December for tanzanite, but what actually are birthstones, what is birthstone jewelry?
Birthstones actually comprise a list of gemstones, one gemstone for each month. These symbolize the month of one’s birth. Gemstones are believed to have special powers, and healing abilities which is said that it bestows on its wearer.
History of Birthstones
It is not confirmed that from where did the trend of birthstones actually began. However, many believe that it is derived from the twelve gemstones that were no consistency in common list of birthstones. Some cultures believed in birthstones as per the Zodiac, some as per the name of the individual.
Finally in 1912, American Jewelers Association ‘Jewelry of America’, in an attempt to introduce a standard list of birthstone officially adopted a list of twelve gemstones which is popularly also called as ‘Modern list of birthstones’. The list widely used all over in the United States and many other countries such as Thailand and Australia. In the year 2002, Tanzanite was added to this list of gemstones by the American Gemstone Trade Association, as a December birthstone along with Blue Topaz.
